- Calci worms are the larvae of the black soldier fly and are a natural nutrient rich feeder insect. High in protein, energy giving fat and amino acids and uniquely high in essential calcium. What are Calciworms?Calciworms are the dried larvae of the black soldier fly, which is a perfectly harmless insect prevalent across most of the world. Calciworms contain around 50 times more calcium than other worms or insects, such as mealworms, which makes them a great supplementary food for wild bird feeding. Calcium is crucial to the diet of wild birds, as it helps them maintain strong bones, boosts muscle health, and supports in egg development. A Year Round FeedCalciworms are a hugely versatile feed, which can be used in wild bird feeders, as a ground or table feed, or mixed into other seeds or mixes. They are suitable for year-round feeding, and can be eaten by a huge range of wild bird species including blackbirds, robins, linnets, starlings, chaffinches, song thrushes, tree and house sparrows, and yellowhammers. They are particularly good for winter and spring feeding, during the nesting season. To get the most out of your calciworms you could soak them in warm water for 30 minutes before feeding, making them softer and more palatable to the birds in the your garden. |
Not Just for Birds!Dried calciworms are not just a great supplementary food for wild birds, but also for most other species with an insectivorous diet, such as reptiles, poultry and fish. They are also a great feed for hedgehogs as an alternative to mealworms, which hedgehogs love but can in fact be extremely harmful to their health.
