Dental hygiene is important for our pets
Dental hygiene is just as important for our pets as it isfor us. Regular care of your pet??s teeth will help prevent dental problemsdeveloping and help to keep your pet healthy, as well as preventingstressful and expensive veterinary treatment. The main cause of dentalproblems are a lack of a regular dental care regime and feeding aninappropriate diet.
Did you know 80% of dogs over the age of 3 have dental issues which can lead to costly dental bills? (Royal Veterinary College)

PlaqueIf your pet??s teeth look like this, it??s clear that they are suffering fromplaque. Plaque is a common problem. It consists of a soft layer ofbacteria, and sugars which accumulate from saliva and food. Plaqueusually accumulates around the gums, but can also occur in other places, especially if these are difficult for the pet to clean with its tongue.Age and individual predisposition (i.e. some individuals are morelikely than others to suffer from it) are also defining factors forplaque formation. You can remove plaque through careful, regulartoothbrushing. |
TartarTartar is the result of not removing plaque, which calcifies into a hardlayer. Everywhere that plaque forms is liable to develop into tartar. You can??t brush tartar away; your veterinary surgeon will need to removeit. |
Healthy teethHealthy teeth should be shiny and cream/white in colour with no roughpatches on the surface. The gums should be pink and bad breath should beminimal. |
How to brush your pet’s teeth
|

|
|
---|---|---|---|
Step 1Begin by lifting your pet??s lips to expose the teeth, buildon this by giving them lots of fuss and praise. Once your pet is used tohaving their mouth touched on the outside, start running your fingeralong their teeth. At this stage, we recomend introducing the Beaphar Finger Toothbrush. |
Step 2Once your pet is accustomed to having their mouth touched, introducethem to a toothbrush and toothpaste in a similar way. Start by squeezinga small amount of toothpaste onto your finger and let them lick it off. |
Step 3Once they are used to the taste of the toothpaste, introduce the toothbrush by letting them lick the toothpaste off it. |
Step 4When your pet is comfortable with this, it is time to combine all theelements of training; brush a few teeth at first and gradually build itup until all the teeth can be brushed. |
