Aluminium oxide – the trade choice

Aluminium oxide is the abrasive paper of choice used by trade professionals in preference to sandpaper. The aluminium oxide grains are more durable, have a self-sharpening action and clog less, giving high performance sanding that outlasts sandpaper by up to 10 times. It’s ideal both for hand sanding – with or without a sanding block – and machine sanding: at 115mm wide the roll is the standard width for power tools. The E-weight backing paper used in ProDec aluminium oxide is highly flexible and crack resistant so it withstands being creased and folded, making it ideal for sanding contoured or shaped surfaces, as well as being easy to cut for power tool use.

Grit guide

ProDec aluminium oxide is available in a range of grits that deliver very fine to very aggressive abrasion and it’s important to select the correct grit to match the task at hand. Use the guide below to help you make the right choice.

40 grit Extra Coarse grade For the toughest jobs, such as stripping very rough or built-up surfaces with or several layers of paint or varnish. This grade gives aggressive abrasion so reserve it for the most difficult tasks.
60 grit Coarse grade For sanding rough sawn wood, rapidly removing previous coatings, wiping away a layer of debris with minimal effort and shaping or rounding edges.
80 grit Medium grade For removing varnish, smoothing surface imperfections and sanding of bare wood to prepare it before painting. Gives medium to coarse surface texture after sanding.
100 grit Medium-Fine grade For removing one or two layers of paint or varnish, smoothing minor surface imperfections and sanding of bare smooth planed wood to prepare it before painting.
120 grit Fine grade For final sanding prior to applying a first coat of paint or varnish to wood, smoothing surface imperfections, removing texture on plaster and fillers and removing water stains on wood. Not suitable for removing paint or varnish.
180 grit Very Fine grade For smoothing minor imperfections between coats of paint, removing surface imperfections, deburring edges and sanding filler to a smooth finish.
240 grit Extra Fine grade For sanding bare wood for a smooth finish before staining, between coats of paint or varnish to give an adhesion key for the next coat and creating a smooth and even finish with plaster.
